Another thing that might be forgotten is that EVH himself said he approached playing the guitar as if playing piano..and of course he was trained to a fairly high level in piano at an early age..so tapping the fret board might have been an instinctive idea he developed from that knowledge he had playing keys rather than pressing on frets and plucking strings in tandem...why not try doing it another way ????

To further my point...if you lookat Hendrixs famous extended solo piece at Woodstock in 1969 you'll notice loads of un picked fret hand "pulloffs"...and as far as i know Van Halen only first seen Page in LA in 1970 playing Heartbreaker...

Yeah i agree with so many here about Pages influence...the solo on Heartbreaker has loads of one hand "double pull offs"...page possibly wasnt even the first to do this...theres a good chance Hendrix and the other great innovator Jeff Beck done it too...and who knows Beck and Pages idols Scotty Moore or Cluff Gallup could have done it...or another huge inovator Les Paul himself...Les Paul ( guitarist, inventor and studio multitrack recording pioneer) like Van Halen was very much into fretboard tricks and was possibly Page's greatest single influence..like Robert Johnson was for Clapton...
